1.  Tanning or sun exposure can cure Acne.

Acne Myths: Learning The Truth

This is a myth.  Tanning only darkens the skin; it does not cause acne.  Sun exposure can and does cause skin cancer but not acne.  To protect your skin, you need to wear a sunscreen.  You want to purchase sunscreens that state they are noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic.  Also, look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide.

2.  Eating fried, oily, or fatty foods can cause acne.

This is a myth.  We have all heard the saying that we are what we eat.  Eating these foods will clog your arteries but not your pores.   Nevertheless, keep your fingers and hands away from your face when eating these foods. Your fingers and hands transfer the oil and grease from the foods you are eating to your face.

3.  Poor hygiene can cause Acne.

This is a myth.   Poor hygiene results in body odor and low self-esteem, it does not cause Acne.  A clogged pore starts from the bottom of the pore not from the top.

4.  Make-up or cosmetic products can cause Acne.

Acne Myths: Learning The Truth

This is part fact and part myth.  There are some unhealthy cosmetics on the market and they can clog the pores due to the oils and heaviness of the make-up.  When wearing make-up, look for the ones that are noncomedogenic or oil-free, as these tend to be lighter.  At the end of the day, remove all make-up from your skin by washing your face with a gentle cleanser.

5.  Sex and masturbation can cause Acne.

This is a myth.  Testosterone, a sex hormone, can cause outbreaks of Acne, but does not cause Acne.  Neither sex nor masturbation will cause Acne.  Back in the 17th century, this statement was use to discourage premarital sex.

6.  The best way to get rid of pimples is to squeeze them.

This is a myth.  When you squeeze a pimple, all you are doing is causing more inflammation and delaying the healing process.  Squeezing of the pimples will eventually lead to scarring.  The squeezing or popping of the pimple may feel good now, but in the end, you will not like the consequences of popping or squeezing that pimple.

7.  Adults do not get Acne.

This is a myth.  Women going through menopause can develop Acne.   Acne in adults does not look like Acne found in teenagers or young adults in their 20’s.  Acne in adults is usually reddish nodules around the mouth and jaw, not pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads on the forehead, nose and checks of teenagers.
